They did a great job with Anna Karenina, and Penguin did a great job packaging it. Fortunately, conversations with a friend and some online sleuthing of pages 823 to 825 of the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation revealed to me the French army, battered, bleeding and hiding in Moscow. I highly recommend the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation. This translation is ideal because it sticks as closely to the text as possible. As one who gave up reading War and Peace twice but breezed through it the third time because it was the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation, I am delighted to hear that Turgenev is next in line! Two different translations can feel like two entirely different books. Things don't turn out well for her after that. Eventually found the updated Pevear & Volokhonsky translation which made all the difference. The Stieg Larsson books, the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of “War and Peace,” and Laurie Sheck's “A Monster's Notes,” to name just a few (many more from his portfolio are delightfully catalogued on his Web site). Elaine makes a misguided attempt to ingratiate herself with a famous Russian writer (hilariously named Testikov) by telling him what Jerry had jokingly told her earlier: that the original title of War and Peace was War, What Is It Good For? Of course, for Russian lit I go straight for Pevear & Volokhonsky! I was all set to write about how excited I am at the new Pevear/Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace. I finished reading War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky) on February 16th and literally every day since then I have thought about how to write this review. Using several examples from Tolstoy's War and Peace, the author gives the reader a whole new look and appreciation into the world of a translator.
